Mark Twain Lake will reach a milestone in 2009, with the 25th anniversary of the opening of the recreational lake project.
Since its dedication on September 8, 1984, Clarence Cannon Dam and Mark Twain Lake have become a focal point of tourism and outdoor recreation in the region.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mark Twain Lake Management office and the Mark Twain Lake Chamber of Commerce are planning a 25th anniversary lake rededication picnic in September. More information on the event will be available at a later date.
During 2008, the lake experienced record high lake levels, topping out at 640.4 feet above sea level on July 30. Normal pool is 606.0 feet above sea level. Despite the record high water levels, the facilities around the lake experienced very little damage and, with the exception of the Bluffview Rec Area, all will be fully operational for 2009.
Located in Monroe and Ralls counties in Northeast Missouri, Mark Twain Lake has 18,600 acres of surface water at normal pool. It is surrounded by 38,400 acres of land managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The sparkling waters and scenic lands of Clarence Cannon Dam and Mark Twain Lake provide countless opportunities for outdoor recreation Ð boating, swimming, fishing, skiing, picnicking, camping, hiking and hunting, to name a few.
YouÕll find developed recreation areas such as campgrounds, picnic shelters, beaches, playgrounds, boat ramps and full service marinas. The recreational opportunities are endless.
The lake is approximately 27 miles in length and provides 285 miles of beautiful shoreline. The lake is ideal for both sailboating and motorboating and provides fishermen with a variety of fish species.=
